Gidney gives Thorold thrilling win

The Hawks dropped second-place Hamilton in Thorold last night

Nick Gidney scored with just 25 seconds remaining in the game to give the Thorold Blackhawks a win over the visiting Hamilton Kilty Bs in Jr. B action last night.

Christian Pelley opened the scoring for Hamilton, giving them a 1-0 lead after the first period with shots being 11-11.

In the second period, Sam Vanderzalm for Thorold tied it up before Christian Pelley gave Hamilton the lead again with his second goal of the game.

The Hawks dominated the second period territorially and Nick Rubino of Thorold tied the game again at 2-2, but Jacob MacDonald gave Hamilton the lead later in the second period on a give-away by Thorold. Hamilton held a lead in the shots department with a two-period total of 23 to Thorold's 18.

Sam Vanderzalm scored his second of the game with just under five minutes left in the third to tie the game at 3.

After a Justin Monteith (Hamilton) high-sticking penalty with 1:47 to go in the third, Nick Gidney scored the game-winner for Thorold on the power play with 25 seconds left. Final period shots were again 11-11 for a game total of 34-29 in Hamilton's favour.

Hamilton’s starter Matteo Drobac made 25 saves on 29 shots and Thorold’s 35 Noah Fortuna made 31 stops on 34 shots.

The next home game for Thorold is Thursday, Nov. 7 against the league-leading Caleonia team. Game time is 7:07 p.m.
