Canadians drop Hawks

Thorold dominated the first period but couldn't sustain their attack last night

The Thorold Blackhawks ended the first period with a 1-0 lead over the visiting Welland Jr. Canadians last night, but it was the last time they held the lead.

Welland went home with a 6-3 win after notching four goals in the second frame and two more in the third. Thorold responded with only one goal in each period.

Thorold looked strong in the first period, outshooting Welland by a 17-5 margin but they couldn't sustain the pressure throughout the game.

Matt Baumann and Dario Tessoro each scored two for the Canadians.

Riley Sutherland, Nick Gidney and Brett Bessette replied for Thorold.

Thorold goalie Noah Fortuna allowed six goals on 24 shots before being replaced by Chase Grsic late in the third period.

Baumann, Tessoro and AJ Scala, all from Welland, were the three game stars.

Thorold’s record now stands at two wins, two losses and a tie, placing them in fourth place early in the new season.
