Blackhawks not returning to Thorold

The team has decided to make the move to Port Colborne permanent, and they will rebrand with a new name and logo

What many Thorold residents feared has become a reality. The Thorold Jr. B Blackhawks have made their move to Port Colborne permanent.

Just last year, the Blackhawks decided to move to the Port Colborne Vale Centre for the season, because the ongoing renovations at the Frank Doherty Arena interfered with the the start of their season.

"We are still the Thorold Blackhawks playing out of Port Colborne and we hope to return to Thorold better than ever for the 2023-24 season,” said the team at the time.

But now, the Blackhawks have decided to leave Thorold for good.

“We would like to thank the City of Thorold, Mayor Terry Ugulini, the entire staff of the Frank Doherty Arena, and our amazing fans for their support over the years,” said the team’s owner Scott Barnes, in a press statement. “We owe all our success to all of you as we enter the next chapter in our team’s history.”

The team intends to rebrand itself with a new name and logo.
