The Welland Jackfish got a balanced attack pounding out 17 hits en route to a 18-5 win over the Brantford Red Sox Thursday during Intercounty Baseball League action at Welland Stadium.

After the Red Sox tied things up for the first time in the top half of the fifth inning with a pair of runs, the Jackfish struck for 13 runs in the bottom half to break things open. In that big inning, the Jackfish had nine hits.

Steven Moretto had a home run, while Gianfranco Morello, Sam Cawker and McCoy Pearce had doubles.

Gus Wilson had two hits, including a double for the Red Sox.

Will Jackman earned the win on the mound. Starter James Bradwell had four strikeouts in four innings. Isaiah Ramos, who struck out eight, took the loss.

The Jackfish improved to 16-6 to hold a lead at the top of the IBL standings. Saturday, they host the Toronto Maple Leafs at 6:05 p.m. The Red Sox drop to 2-19 and they visit the Hamilton Cardinals Friday at 7:35 p.m.

Rain cancels two games

Mother Nature wasn’t kind to some Intercounty Baseball League teams Thursday.

The rain cancelled the Toronto Maple Leafs at the Kitchener Panthers, as well as the game between the Guelph Royals and Barrie Baycats.

Both games will be rescheduled.
