Which kid in Thorold has the most beautiful bike?

The Thorold Community Credit Union is hosting a bike decorating contest on August 12; 'We have some great kids and some great talent out there so it’ll be nice to see what they come up with this year'

After a two-year pandemic hiatus, the Thorold Community Credit Union is once again hosting its annual bike decorating contest for kids on August 12.

“We used to have it on Canada Day but this year it’s to coincide with our community barbecue for Community Care, and the car show is in town the same night,” says the CEO of the Thorold Community Credit Union, Tim Whalen, in an interview with ThoroldToday.

The theme of this year’s contest is 'Canadian style' but Whalen says that he wants kids to be creative.

“Whatever makes it look pretty, we’re leaving it wide open this year,” he says. “Just decorate your bike and bring it over. We have some great kids and some great talent out there so it’ll be nice to see what they come up with this year.”

The top three winners will get either get 100, 50, or 25 dollars in a Thorold Community Credit Union savings account.

"It gives them a jump start on learning what bank accounts are all about," says Whalen.

The contest will take place at a community barbecue, also hosted by the Thorold Community Credit Union, where all proceeds will go to Community Care.

At the event Whalen will also announce the three lucky recipients of a scholarship donated by the Thorold Community Credit Union.

“It’s a $500 bursary we present every year to a post-secondary student,” he says. “We have three of them this year.”

After not being able host their community barbecue and bike decorating contest for two years, Whalen says he is counting down the days until August 12.

“It’s great,” says Whalen. “It’s in the middle of the Canada Games also so hopefully we get a big hype around town and have everybody have a good time with it.”

The bike decorating contest will take place at the annual Community Care barbecue hosted by the Thorold Community Credit Union on 63 Front St. The barbecue will run between 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. Judging of the bikes will start at 4:30 p.m.
