Niagara Region Public Health says they have confirmed a case of West Nile Virus in a mosquito.

The mosquito was found in St Catharines.

No human cases have been confirmed, but Public Health reminds residents to be vigilant.

"While the mosquitoes that tested positive were found in St. Catharines, all Niagara residents should take the necessary precautions to prevent WNV," a statement read.

Public Health recommends the following steps to reduce the risk of being bitten:

• Wear long-sleeved shirts, long pants, socks and shoes when outdoors

• Whenever you use mosquito repellent, apply a product containing DEET or Icaridin, and carefully read and follow the manufacturer’s directions

• Drain any areas of standing or stagnant water on your property on a regular basis, including bird baths, old tires, pails, toys and wheelbarrows

• Make sure all windows and doors in your home have screens that are in good condition

West Nile Virus does not cause symptoms in most people, but about 1 in 15 people might develop a fever with other symptoms such as headache, body aches, joint pains, vomiting, diarrhea, or rash.

Most people with this type of West Nile virus disease recover completely, but fatigue and weakness can last for weeks or months, according to the CDC.
