Turtles are on the move in Niagara right now, and drivers are asked to slow down and keep their eyes peeled for little dinosaurs crossing the road.

Right now is nesting season, and Lincoln County Humane Society volunteers have been reporting several turtles in the region over the last few days.

'If you see a turtle on the road please help him or her (when safe to do so),' LCHS wrote in a social media post and shared some turtle-saving advice.

'Any turtle, even the small couch sized ones, can be moved by holding the shell on each side of the tail and dragging turtle a short distance towards side of road it was facing originally. You can also lift turtle with your impressive triceps by holding the shell in the same spot (one hand holding shell on each side of the tail) to lift onto a shovel, towel or tarp, to move off the road without dragging. A small turtle can be picked up like a hamburger w hand on each side of the shell. Never hold a turtle by the tail EVER.'

LCHS also reminds those who touch a turtle to use hand sanitizer immediately, as they can carry bacteria that could cause health problems.

'But hey, nothing new for us pandemic long haulers!'

It takes a turtle to reach 30 before it can reproduce, an age that many are not get to due to being struck by cars, poaching or habitat loss.

All Ontario turtle species except one are on the Endangered Species list.
