Thorold tunnel remains closed

Midnight tonight predicted as earliest possible time to reopen

OPP are investigating after a garbage truck entered the Thorold tunnel with dumpster forks raised, striking the ceiling. The accident happened yesterday morning shortly before noon as reported in the Thorold News.

The truck left the scene but hours later OPP Sgt. Kerry Schmidt Tweeted, "The suspect vehicle has been identified and investigators are speaking with the driver. Thank you to all the citizens that called in with tips. The tunnel will remain closed until tomorrow at midnight at the earliest."

The collision caused substantial damage to the ceiling and a section collapsed narrowly missing the car in the above photo. MTO personnel are on scene to determine extent of the damage and if any other ceiling panels were damaged before making a decision on when to re-open.
