When the pandemic hit the region, meetings in city hall were among the first things to get shut down, along with other city facilities.

But next Tuesday, city council will be assembling again - via video link.

“I have been at some regional Zoom meetings, but this will be the first council meeting we have held like this,” says Thorold mayor Terry Ugulini.

He will personally be in city hall along with a handful of essential city staff but while maintaining social distancing.

“We will be more than six feet apart. The councillors will call in,” said Ugulini.

The decision to hold the meetings over video follows a surge in long-distance meetings since social distancing-protocols were put in place.

Ugulini said while the council meeting will likely feature items relating to the current pandemic, regular city business must be dealt with as well.

“There could be bylaw- and planning issues. We don’t know how it’s gonna work out yet. It will be interesting,” the mayor said.

He says the citys current focus since closing popular walking trails like the boardwalk near the Mel Swart conservation area is to ensure people properly social distance.

“That is why we had to close the boardwalk. You can’t properly social distance there. We don’t like it but we didn’t have a choice.”

The council meeting will be broadcasted on the official Thorold YouTube channel.
