Small businesses encouraged to apply for 12th annual FirstOntario 1Awards

HAMILTON – The 12th annual FirstOntario 1Awards are once again open to established, local small businesses with the desire to grow. Entrepreneurs in Hamilton, Halton, Brant, Niagara and surrounding areas are encouraged to apply for a chance to pitch their passion to win and share $25,000 in cash and $175,000 in professional, in-kind services.

The purpose of the competition is to award hard-working business owners with prizes that can help them build on current successes that will translate into a sustainable future.

“The 1Awards has grown into its own community and network of likeminded business owners who continue to work collaboratively to achieve success,” said Joanne Battaglia, Senior Vice President, Marketing, Communications and Community Impact. “We’re grateful for our partners who continue to support this program and offer unique services and benefits to these businesses to help them grow and succeed.”

Partners include Agro Zaffiro LLP, Giant Shoe Creative, KPMG, Mohawk College, PLAY, The Hamilton Spectator, and Weever. Additional sponsors include The Thornton Group, Hamilton Chamber of Commerce, Greater Niagara Chamber of Commerce and Carmen’s Group.

Chosen finalists will present a 15-minute pitch to a panel of judges on May 9 to demonstrate past success, present challenges and future aspirations. Partners determine how the prizes will be allocated following the presentations based on individual needs.

The deadline to apply at 1Awards.ca is 11:59 p.m. on Sunday, March 31. Eligible businesses must have 50 employees or less, be in operation for at least two years and not be a charitable or non-profit organization. They must demonstrate measureable growth, innovation and community impact. Full details can be found at 1Awards.ca
