Media outlets in the U.S. are reporting that the Capitol building has been cleared of rioters after a mob stormed in this afternoon, halting the process under which American lawmakers must count the Electoral College votes from the presidential election.

Reuters, CNN and NPR are reporting that the building is now secure.

PBS is reporting that lawmakers are expected to return tonight to count the Electoral College votes, confirming Joe Biden's win.

Biden, George W. Bush, the former president, and others have labelled today's events an 'insurrection,' condemning the actions of the rioters.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau issued the following statement tonight via Facebook:

"Canadians are deeply disturbed and saddened by the attack on democracy in the United States, our closest ally and neighbour. Violence will never succeed in overruling the will of the people. Democracy in the US must be upheld - and it will be."

U.S President Donald Trump, meanwhile, has called on the rioters to go home but has failed to denounce their actions, telling the group in a video posted to Twitter this afternoon (but later removed as Twitter froze his account) that he 'loves' them. Trump, whose latest tweets were deleted by the social media platform, has continued to baselessly claim that the election was 'stolen' and that Biden's win was the result of massive fraud.
