Province reports 1,130 COVID hospitalizations, 185 people in ICU

With no update on Friday, Saturday's report includes two days worth of data

On April 16, Public Health Ontario is reporting 1,130 COVID-positive patients in hospital and 185 people in intensive care units with COVID.

There are also 4,201 new COVID cases, although new case counts are underestimated as testing is limited. 

Today's update included data for two days with the province also reporting Friday's numbers due to it being a holiday.

Friday's data update included 1,427 COVID-positive patients in hospital and 182 people in ICU,

The number of new cases Friday was 4,332.

The next data update will come on Monday and include data for two days as well.

The April 16 updates provided by the province's public health agency and the ministry of health also reported the following data:

Cases

  • 2,797 recoveries and 10 deaths in Saturday's report. 
  • Among the new cases confirmed today are 455 people who are not fully vaccinated, 912 who are fully vaccinated and 2,668 who have received a booster vaccine dose. 
  • Lab-confirmed testing is mostly limited to Indigenous people, hospitalized people, and those who live or work in high-risk congregate care settings. As such a majority of the people being tested are fully vaccinated as per provincial or workplace mandatory vaccine policies.

Hospitalizations

  • 1,130 people are in hospital testing positive for COVID-19. Of those, 45 per cent were hospitalized because of COVID-19 and the other 55 per cent were admitted for other reasons but tested positive for COVID. 
  • There are 185 patients in Ontario ICUs with COVID. Of those, 65 per cent were admitted because of COVID-19 and the other 35 per cent were admitted for other reasons but tested positive for COVID.
  • There are 80 COVID patients on ventilators.
  • Not all hospitals report on weekends and holidays, so hospitalization numbers are incomplete this weekend. 

Public Health Ontario has confirmed 1,217,574 cases of COVID-19 since the start of the pandemic and reported 1,168.929 recoveries and 12,629 deaths.
