A large number of social media reports sparked panic among Niagara parents on Wednesday morning, but police said nothing out of the ordinary has occurred.

ThoroldToday has not been able to track the exact source of the claim, however popular Facebook page Niagara411 said hundreds of emails had come in to them about a potential dangerous situation at a local school. Niagara411 said it had no information to back up the claim, and was awaiting confirmation from NRPS.

Police told ThoroldToday that it was aware of concern on social media.

"We are aware of reports circulating on social media in regard to schools. At this time detectives are investigating, however the reports appear to be unsubstantiated. There is no known threat to the public or student safety," a spokesperson said.

Neither DSBN nor Niagara Catholic School Board have made any announcements about the claim.
