Niagara Falls YMCA closes permanently

Declining membership numbers presented as the reason
Closed

YMCA will be closing its location in the MacBain Community Centre in Niagara Falls, the organization announced on Monday.

Declining membership numbers has been weighing on the location, that has been open since 2005, said a statement from YMCA.

“We are saddened that this closure will affect many members, staff and supporters in the community who have been part of our YMCA family for many years,” said Mike Watt, Chair of YMCA of Niagara’s Board of Directors in a statement.

“However, as a responsible charity with very limited reserves, we cannot compromise our long-term ability to serve Niagara by continuing to operate facilities that are not financially viable. We are very appreciative of our partnership with the City of Niagara Falls and remain committed to the Niagara Falls community.”

The branch has been closed since mid-March due to the pandemic.

YMCA locations in St Catharines, Grimsby. Port Colborne, and Welland were allowed to open back up for a period of time, before being closed down again as the province-wide lockdown came into effect.
