A new lawn-sign campaign takes aim at speeding or distracted drivers on Niagara’s residential streets, that has become an increasing problem in recent years.
On Tuesday night, Thorold city council heard that CAA Niagara is planning to distribute free lawn signage urging drivers to slow down, starting later this summer.
“We have received a lot of interest from our members, and want to distribute it to non-members as well” said CAA spokesperson Desiree Swance at the meeting.
The organization has already received endorsement from several Niagara municipalities, whose logos will appear on the finalized version of the sign, which will help display a united front in the fight against dangerous driving practices, continued Swance. The signs will be available at local city halls, or at CAA offices for those who want to display the message, as well as at in-person events.
Council expressed its support for the idea.
“I think it is great,” said Coun. Victoria Wilson.
“Signs like these have recently popped up near my house, and it really made me look at my spedometer. It is quite scary to cross the street out there, so anything that can help avoid an accident is wonderful.”
Recently, police published a photo of a verhicle that was just inches from hitting an 11-year-old boy who was crossing Richmond Street, after it drove through a stop-sign.
That incident is still under investigation.
CAA said it is hoping to print the lawn signs in August.
