More than 100 Thorold residents are currently dealing with a case of COVID-19, days after Public Health confirmed that the Omicron variant had reached Niagara.

Public Health reported 520 new cases across the region on Sunday in what appears to be two days worth of numbers.

The update shows more than 1,750 Covid-cases are now active across the region in the latest surge of the pandemic, confirming the fears held by the region's top doctor Mustafa Hirji, who a week ago warned that Niagara could be seeing an explosion of cases related to the Omicron variant.

After the weekend, Public Health confirmed the first cases of the Omicron variant among patients who had tested positive for the virus.

Before the weekend, Niagara saw its highest daily increase of new cases, when Public Health reported 267 new confirmed infections.

That is the highest daily case count since 238 cases were reported on January 11.

Meanwhile Niagara Health is caring for 34 Niagara residents who have been hospitalized with the virus, according to the latest report on December 24.

8 patients were then admitted to the ICU.

The vaccination status of the hospitalized, according to Niagara Health, was 15 fully vaccinated and 19 unvaccinated.

The patients were age 41 and up.

55 percent of Niagara residents in the 80+ age group have received booster shots.

Shalom Manor in Grimsby and West Lincoln Memorial Hospital are currently dealing with outbreaks of the virus.
