'Mermaid Squad' at downtown beauty salon cares for customers

Making Waves Beauty is hosting a customer appreciation day on Saturday; 'We’re really grateful that we’ve been able to get out on the other side of COVID'

Now that masks have come off and COVID-19 restrictions have eased, beauty salon Making Waves Beauty in downtown Thorold is hosting a big reopening party on Saturday.

“Throughout COVID I managed to expand my team and add on new services,” says owner Marysa Reid, in an interview with ThoroldToday. “Now that there’s no restrictions we wanted to do a customer appreciation open house to celebrate our reopening.”

Reid founded the beauty salon on Front Street back in 2019. Throughout the years she has amassed a group of beauty specialists who help her offer a wide range of treatments, such as laser procedures, teeth whitening, and facial care.

“We call ourselves the 'Mermaid Squad,'” says Reid. “We’re just a team of mermaids who help you achieve your aesthetic goals. We’re like a little family. We’re always very supportive of each other. It was definitely great to be able to get through it all together, just having the support of one another has been really awesome.”

Because of COVID-19 it’s been a difficult couple of years, according to Reid.

“The beauty industry was hit pretty hard,” she says. “When we reopened at first we were restricted and we couldn’t do any services on the face, even lashes and stuff, you couldn’t touch the face at all.”

Now that restrictions have eased, business has been booming again.

“It’s gotten a lot better,” she says. “There’s a lot of new people in the area, even on Front Street you can tell the foot traffic is slowly starting to pick up again. The odd time we get people that still don’t know we can do face services now, because it’s been so confusing.”

To celebrate the reopening, the beauty salon will offer many different promotions on Saturday.

“We are going to have some refreshments and some really great package deals,” says Reid. “We’re offering some complimentary services: laser hair removal in small areas, we’re doing mini face lifts, we’re going to have some door prizes and a raffle basket as well.”

There will also be a collection of non-perishable food items to donate to Community Care. Reid says it’s the least she can do for the local community who have been so unwavering in their support.

“I never imagined that I would have a team,” says Reid. “Especially with COVID, we’ve still been able to grow and expand and add on new services. We’re really grateful that we’ve been able to get out on the other side of COVID and we’re still here.”

Making Waves Beauty is located at 46B Front Street. The customer appreciation event will be held this Saturday from 11 a.m. until 7 p.m.
