While food banks and other social agencies across Niagara are seeing increases in clients facing economic hardship amidst the pandemic, it isn't just humans who are in need of support services.

Lincoln County Humane Society, LCHS, said they are pleased to now be able to help more families in need feed their pets after its Pet Food Bank Program received a sizeable donation.

Kevin Strooband, Executive Director at LCHS said a $3,500 donation from Humane Canada enabled the organization to purchase two skids of food, which turned into 14 skids after MARS, maker of brands like Royal Canin and Nutro, decided to pitch in to support the program, that has been running for several years.

“Pets are part of our families and bring so much to our lives; this has never been more evident then throughout this ongoing pandemic,” expressed Suzanna Dalrymple, General Manager, Mars Pet Nutrition Canada, in a statement.

“That’s why we're so pleased to support Lincoln County Humane Society and help those pet parents in need with access to food.”

Originally, the LCHS hoped to provide food to 120 families across Niagara. Their reach now stands to help many more families.

“This grant and subsequent donation will reach many families and pets in need across the Niagara Region” said Kevin Strooband, Executive Director of the Lincoln County Humane Society.

“Our goal is to keep families and pets together. Humane Canada, MARS, and our Food Ontario food bank partners have worked together to meet that goal and to help our community.”

As many recipients are unable to attend the shelter in St. Catharines, the LCHS formed new partnerships with several food banks across Niagara, including:

  • West Lincoln Community Care, 2660 Industrial Park Road, Smithville
  • Community Care of West Niagara, 4309 Central Avenue, Beamsville
  •  Welland Hope Centre, 570 King Street, Welland
  • Pelham Cares, 191 Hwy 20 E, Fonthill
  • Port Cares, 61 Nickel Street, Port Colborne

Those in need of pet food are encouraged to visit the LCHS in St. Catharines or contact any of the Food Ontario distribution partner locations.
