Juicy and delicious: Port Robinson to celebrate the strawberry

Port Robinson Community Centre hosting a Strawberry Social on Sunday June 26, featuring a barbecue, strawberry desserts, and live music by O’Malley’s Mates

Summer is on the doorstep, which means strawberry season is here. To celebrate, the Port Robinson Community Centre is organizing a Strawberry Social on Sunday June 26.

“It’s the first time we’re trying it,” says the chair of the community centre’s board, Marty Wilson, in an interview with ThoroldToday. “Actually, it was funny because when we talked about this back in January we hadn’t heard of a Strawberry Social in a long time. All of a sudden, everybody is doing it this year.”

The event will be held between 1 p.m. and 4 p.m. There will be a barbecue and strawberry desserts for purchase, and local music band O’Malley’s Mates have signed on as the entertainment.

“It’s going to be a fun day,” says Wilson. “The big thing now is that Mother Nature cooperates because it’s all planned for outside.”

During the event, local historian Tom Russell will take visitors on a trip through the history of the community centre, which used to be an old school house back in the 1800s.

“Tom is going to give a little history on the building itself,” Wilson says. “Along the outside, some kids put their names on those bricks and it’s old community names. They dated it and some of the dates are like 1888.”

As always, all proceeds will go towards the beautification of the community centre.

“Our main goal for this year is to replace the old window that is above the entrance,” says Wilson. “Hopefully within the next month or so that will be put up. Our other goal is to get a new sign for the building.”

Admission to the event is completely free as long as you bring a non-perishable food item for Community Care.
