Former Thorold Mayor's house outgrown by record crop

That's one big sunflower

The 'Good things grow in Ontario'-slogan proved to be true for Thorold's former Mayor Henry D'Angela, who sent pictures of his personal record crop to the Thorold News.

D'Angela told Thorold News in an email that the pandemic awarded him a great deal of time in the garden – a family tradition that was benefited by the sweltering summer heat.

The result: a sunflower that stood over 15 ft. in length, and a Sicilian zucchini, measuring 7 feet and one inch.

"My parents have always maintained a garden at their house in Thorold and my dad was impressed with this year's crop of zucchini," D'Angela wrote.

D'Angela is not the first Niagara resident to end up with a large crop of the kind.

In 2014, a Niagara Falls man grew an 8 ft 3.3 inches long zucchini, comparable to more than two baseball bats in length, rendering him widespread attention and a place in Guinness Book of World Records.

The tallest sunflower measures 9.17 m (30 ft 1 in) and was grown by Hans-Peter Schiffer in Karst, Nordrhein Westfalen, Germany.
