The Fonthill Lions Club launched their Drive-Thru Meals program, starting with Breakfast with a Side of Santa on Sunday, Nov. 29. This inaugural Drive-Thru was a pilot event for the Fonthill Lions as they strive to find new ways to raise money for their community service.

Over 165 breakfasts were served to drive in customers by members of the Fonthill Lions and Lioness. Breakfasts were $5 each including four pancakes, three sausages, maple syrup, butter and a candy cane treat.

Socially-distanced Santa, and the Lions mascot lion, sent holiday greetings from the centre of the Christmas decorated parking lot.

Several generous community members, Kristi Germain and Angie Aleo, from Pleasantview Funeral Home, and one other donor who wishes to remain anonymous, purchased meals on behalf of Pelham Cares and Pelham Non-Profit Housing as a way to give back during these challenging times.

“This was the first of our monthly Drive-Thru Meals” said Don McGovern, Fonthill Lion and organizer of the event, “Our next meal will be 4:30 – 6:30 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 17 and will be a half chicken dinner with potato, coleslaw, gravy and dessert. Watch for details on our website.”

Like many businesses, service clubs and charity organizations, the Fonthill Lions’ fundraising efforts were severely thwarted by COVID-19. Most of their funding sources were cancelled for reasons of public safety, so the Lions were forced to find new activities to raise money.

While it is not the same as Sliderfest, pasta dinners, agriculture night or other Lions events, hopefully these Drive-Thru Meals, will remind people of our local thriving community spirit and service. Just another reminder that “We Serve”, which is now the global motto for Lions International, was created in 1954 by Lion Doug Stephenson, member of the Fonthill Lions.

Today the Fonthill Lions still proudly boast of being the global 'Motto Makers.'
