Drivers who have passed a school bus with flashing lights and stop-arm extended can almost be sure they will receive a ticket starting later this month.

Last year, school buses in the Niagara region got equipped with front- and rear-facing cameras aimed to capture license plates of drivers violating the rule and passing a stopped school bus.

Now, police say that charges will start being laid and fines issued for drivers, after a warning period where those caught on camera have received warning letters.

A conviction will result in a $490 fine, police say.

It is the operator that reports the offense to the police along with the footage.

Over 100 school buses in Niagara are equipped with the cameras, who were installed on the initiatives of the bus operators, like Sharp.
