COVID-19: Highest number of daily cases since early February reported in Niagara on Wednesday

NRPH reports 53 new confirmed cases of COVID-19, noting the highest daily case count since early February. The number of active cases has now risen to 380.

Public Health also reports one new death, now totalling 375. 244 variant cases have been identified to date.

One new outbreaks was noted in a community setting. The list of nursing home outbreaks remains clear, except for Portal Village in Port Colborne, who has had an outbreak ongoing since March 5.

Locally, known active cases of COVID-19 continues to increase. In Thorold, there are currently 24 cases that have not yet resolved. In an interview with Thoroldnews.com last week, Mayor Terry Ugulini said he was disturbed over the increasing number of cases in Thorold recently, and said he was hoping to get some more clarity from Public Health over where the cases are being found.

The region's medical officer of health said in the beginnig of this week that most cases are now in residents living out in the community, and that the most common route of transmission remains spread within households. 

Ontario reported 1,571 cases on Wednesday.
