COVID-19: 11 new cases in Niagara today as province sees highest daily increase since June

Niagaras public health agency reported 11 new cases of COVID-19 on Friday in the highest daily increase since early July.

With 5 recoveries, the number of active cases in Niagara is now 56.

There are currently no Covid-patients receiving care in Niagara’s hospitals.

Niagara Region reports more than 61 percent of residents having received a full series of vaccines.

The increase was also noted across the province.

Public Health Ontario reported 340 new COVID cases in today's update (Aug. 6), which is the highest number of cases reported in a single day since June. 

The report includes 149 new recoveries and 18 deaths. Sixteen of the deaths occurred more than six weeks ago, but were previously unreported. 

The deaths include one person under 19 years old, 14 people between 60 and 79 years old, and three people over 79 years old. 

Since yesterday's report, 17 people have been hospitalized with COVID-19 and three were admitted to an intensive care unit.

The August 6 update provided by the province's public health agency also reported the following data:

  • 1,879 active, lab-confirmed cases, up from 1,706 yesterday.
  • 114 COVID-positive people are currently hospitalized in Ontario.
  • There are 110 patients in intensive care units with COVID-related illness (of those, 30 no longer test positive for COVID-19).
  • 56 people are on ventilators due to COVID-related illness (of those, 20 no longer test positive for COVID-19).
  • The province reported 23,448 tests were processed yesterday, resulting in a 1.4 per cent positivity rate. 
  • There are 8,227 tests still awaiting processing, and the provincial labs have processed 16.6 million tests to date.
  • Of the new cases reported today, 22 are from Waterloo, 80 are from Toronto, 36 cases are from Peel, seven are from Simcoe-Muskoka, 14 are from Grey-Bruce, and 41 are from York Region.
  • Today's cases include 92 individuals aged 19 and under, 156 people between 20 and 39 years old, 60 people between 40 and 59 years old, 28 people between 60 and 79 years old, and five people over 79 years old.

Public Health Ontario has confirmed 551,678 cases of COVID-19 since the start of the pandemic, and reported 540,407 recoveries and 9,392 deaths.
