Niagara’s Public Health agency logged 17 new cases of COVID-19 on Monday, after this weekend saw 27 new cases added to the count.
Following 15 recoveries, the number of active cases across Niagara is now 148.
Despite increases noted in both St Catharines and Niagara Falls, Thorold currently has 6 active cases, which is among the lowest in municipalities across Niagara.
There are now 3 ongoing outbreaks of COVID-19, however the virus has still not reentered nursing- or retirement facilities.
4 patients are hospitalized with COVID-19. One of them is being treated in the ICU.
Despite increases over the past couple of weeks, the death toll has remained unchanged at 420 for close to a month.
Ontario update
Public Health Ontario reported 639 new COVID cases today (Aug. 20).
The latest update noted 502 recoveries and zero deaths.
The Aug. 23 update provided by the province's public health agency also reported the following data:
- Of the 722 cases reported yesterday, 444 were unvaccinated, 76 were partially vaccinated, 158 were fully vaccinated, and the vaccination status for 44 of the cases was unknown. The vaccination status for today's new cases has not yet been posted.
- 5,126 active, lab-confirmed cases, up from 4,989 yesterday.
- 204 COVID-positive people are currently hospitalized in Ontario.*
- Among the patients hospitalized (excluding ICU) 103 are unvaccinated, nine are partially vaccinated, and 23 are fully vaccinated.
- There are 121 COVID-positive patients in intensive care, plus another 30 patients who no longer test positive for COVID-19.
- 64 COVID patients are on ventilators and another 18 patients on ventilators no longer test positive for COVID-19.
- Of the patients in intensive care, 67 are unvaccinated, nine are partially vaccinated, and seven are fully vaccinated
- 9,770,389 Ontarians (about 66 per cent of total population) have been fully vaccinated and another 948,786 have a single dose of COVID vaccine.
- The province reported 19,866 tests were processed yesterday, resulting in a 2.8 per cent positivity rate. Provincial labs have processed 17 million tests to date.
- Of the new cases reported today 124 are from Toronto, 97 from Peel, 19 from Simcoe-Muskoka, seven from Grey-Bruce, and 91 are from York Region.
- Today's cases include 107 individuals under 12 years old, 63 youth between 12 and 19 years old, 301 people between 20 and 39 years old, 149 people between 40 and 59 years old, 46 people between 60 and 79 years old, and eight people over 79 years old.
*On the weekend, not all hospitals report their bed census data, so hospitalizations, ICU admissions, and vaccination status, so hospitalization numbers are subject to change, and vaccination status for hospitalized cases is not updated on Sunday or Monday.
Public Health Ontario has confirmed 560,151 cases of COVID-19 since the start of the pandemic, and reported 545,572 recoveries and 9,453 deaths.
The cumulative average incidence rate in the province is 3,801.8 cases per 100,000 people in Ontario.
Ontario's average weekly incidence rate is 25.8 cases per 100,000 people, which is up by 26.5 per cent from the week of Aug. 7.
