The city of Thorold is raising a flag to honor seniors.

Mayor Ugulini along with limited representatives from the Age Friendly Committee and Age-Friendly Niagara Network will raise a flag at Thorold City Hall to recognize Seniors Month. The inaugural flag was raised by the Region of Niagara to commemorate Seniors month.
The City of Thorold flag will remain raised until June 8, 2020. Each year, the Province marks the month of June as Seniors Month in Ontario. This year’s theme is Aging Strong: Respect and Protect Seniors.
The month is a province wide celebration of the invaluable knowledge and experience that seniors pass on to all
ages of the community. During these difficult times of physical distancing, it is more important than ever to honour and acknowledge the contributions of all seniors.
The Age-Friendly Niagara Network is a voluntary group that raises awareness of the World Health Organization’s principles for an Age-Friendly Community and promotes their implementation in local communities. In recognition of Seniors Month, the Age-Friendly Niagara Network has endorsed two flag options available to municipalities in Niagara.
Both options include the wording A Community for All Ages. Thorold is proud to raise the new flag in recognition of Seniors Month. The Thorold flag includes the Thorold Age-Friendly logo beside the Age-Friendly Niagara logo. Both logos depict active living. The human figure in the Age-Friendly Niagara logo represents an active person of no particular age or gender positioned inside a circle to symbolize an inclusive community for all ages.
The Thorold logo has various images of active living and socialization throughout an older adults aging journey. Raising the flag will help to increase the awareness and visibility of local Age-Friendly initiatives.
“The Age-Friendly Niagara Network Leadership Council is to be commended for the creation of this flag to recognize seniors who work tireless in our community giving to others and their families,” said Mayor Terry Ugulini.
“Aging Strong and creating A Community For All Ages is important as Thorold strives to optimize opportunities for overall well-being for our seniors.”
