A fundraiser to restore the Harriet Tubman statue that was vandalized recently is well underway.

On Friday morning, close to $10,000 had been raised by more than 100 donors to restore the bust, that was thrown to the ground, crushing the statue that has been visible outside the Salem Baptist Church for the past 10 years.

It was on Thanksgiving Monday that a St Catharines resident discovered the toppled bust of Harriet Tubman, a Black pioneer who helped numerous slaves find freedom in Canada.

One man is facing charges for the incident, that police said does not appear racially motivated.

The fundraiser, organized by owner and operator of BlackOwned905, Natasha Bell, is aiming to raise $13,000 for the replacement of the statue.

The sculptor, Frank Rekrut will recreate the statue.

The cost to replace the statue using specialty cement is estimated at $11,500 to $12,000 CAD. A bronze statue would cost $13,000 CAD.
