Blaze of fire causes alarm in downtown Thorold

A grass fire behind Beaverdams Rd. and Ormond St. caused quite a stir last night; 'There was no damage to any nearby structures, nor injuries to any civilians or fire staff on scene'

Smoke filled the air over downtown Thorold last night.

A grass fire behind Beaverdams Rd. and Ormond St. created a huge plume of smoke that had residents posting worried messages on social media.

“That’s massive,” wrote one person.

“Can smell it out in Winterberry,” wrote another.

According to the local fire department, fires in that natural patch of land are not out of the norm.

“We can definitely say that this has been a common area for grass fires over the years,” Fire Deputy Chief Mike DeGasperis writes to ThoroldToday

After arriving on the scene at 8 p.m., it took about 2 hours and a half for the fire department to put the fire out.

“The fire was contained by crews upon arrival as it was attacked from multiple locations to help mitigate it and further keep it under control,” says DeGasperis.

In footage taken today, a scorched plot of land is clearly visible and ashes are still blowing in the wind:

A cause for the fire is not yet known at this time.

“There was no damage to any nearby structures, nor injuries to any civilians or fire staff on scene,” concludes DeGasperis.
