Niagara saw 85 new cases of COVID-19 on Sunday, following a weekend of higher numbers not topped since early May.

As cases have been going up steadily on a daily basis in the past week, the rate of recovery appears to have slowed down, leaving the region’s active case count at 699 on Sunday.

Thorold now has 39 of those cases, which has been increasing steadily in the past 14 days.

The breakdown from nearby municipalities:

St. Catharines: 159

Niagara Falls: 131

Fort Erie: 59

Welland: 55

Pelham: 30

NOTL: 37

19 residents, primarily in the 65+ age group are being cared for in area hospitals.

14 are unvaccinated and 5 fully vaccinated.

In Niagara, the Delta variant is the dominating strain of the virus, with no cases yet found that belong to the Omicron variant.

In statements this week, Public Health representatives said there is a risk that local case numbers could 'blow up to numbers we haven't seen before', pointing to Kingston, Ont. which currently has the highest number of COVID-19 cases in Canada, which the region's top doctor has pointed out likely is the 'true impact' of the Omicron variant.

Currently, more than 20 percent of the region's cases are pending confirmation on what variant they belong to.
