LETTER: City must find way to make field of dreams a reality

Reader laments 'devastating' news that the City of Thorold will not sell McMillan Park to Niagara school board, which hoped to build a new turf football field

The DSBN hoped to install a turf field at McMillan Park.

ThoroldToday received the following letter to the editor from reader Dale Ohm in response to our story, McMillan Park will not be getting a turf football field.

I am writing in response to the devastating news that the City of Thorold could not find a way to make the new turf field for Thorold Secondary School a reality.

How short is the collective memory of Thorold City Council?

Less than ten years ago, TSS was about to be closed because of declining enrolment. For six months, the community rallied together to convince the District School Board of Niagara that Thorold Secondary School was not only viable, but absolutely fundamental to the quality of life for the children, families, and, indeed, all citizens of Thorold.

By just one vote, the DSBN trustees saved our beloved and historic Thorold Secondary School from closure, in June 2012!

Why did we bother if we are not willing to provide the children of Thorold with the same educational opportunities and high quality facilities afforded to all other Niagara students? Do we no longer plan for the continued growth and improvement of our community facilities?

After months of negotiation, Thorold Council has decided that they need a guarantee that the DSBN will abide by provincial legislation, if, at some time in the future, the school is closed.

As far as I am aware, both the DSBN and the city of Thorold must obey the laws of the province.

Thorold Secondary School has long been a source of pride in our community. Our students receive an outstanding education, right here in their own city.

Thorold Council must find a way to come to an agreement soon!
