BEHIND THE SCENES: Local lottery winners share the wealth

Village Media reporter Tyler Evans tells the story of two Orillia friends who are determined to use their $1M lottery win to help the entire community

Two Orillia women who won a $1 million lottery are determined to share their winnings with worthy causes.

As OrilliaMatters reported earlier this month, best friends JoAnn MacQueen and Marlisa Mercer have already donated big cheques to multiple organizations, including Lighthouse, Orillia Soldiers’ Memorial Hospital, the Orillia SPCA, the Farley Foundation, the Salvation Army, the Royal Canadian Legion poppy campaign in Orillia, Mariposa House Hospice, and the Sharing Place Food Centre.

“They are completely focused on how can they help to make this community a better place through this win,” says Chris Peacock, executive director of the Sharing Place. “Not many people win a million bucks and have the core goal of spending it on others and improving this community.”

Reporter Tyler Evans, who covered the feel-good story, was a recent guest on Village Media's "Behind the Scenes."
