Woman charged with theft after elderly couple offers assistance

Police say the accused took money from the St. Catharines couple as they were acting good faith, providing taxi fare

On Thursday, April 8, 2021 at 1:39 p.m., 1 District (St. Catharines) uniform officers attended the area of Church Street and Court Street in the City of St. Catharines in regards to a theft.

Investigation revealed an unknown female attended a residence in the area of Church Street and Court Street and knocked on an elderly couples door. The female stated she had a family medical emergency and needed to call 911. The couple allowed the female into their home.

After a brief telephone conversation the female requested $10 for a taxi. Confused but acting in good faith, the couple agreed. When the couple provide the female money, [it is alleged that] she reached into a plastic cup of Canadian currency, and pulled out multiple bills. Then when confronted, the female threw some money on a table and fled.

As a result of the investigation, officers were able to identify a female suspect.

On April 9, 2021, the suspect was arrested.

Susan Peacock, 47 years old of Welland, was arrested and charged with the following offence of:
    •    Theft under $5,000

Peacock was released on a form 10 – undertaking with a future court date.
