Two arrested and charged with theft after copper wire stolen in Welland

In the early morning hours of Oct. 9, 2019 members of the Niagara Regional Police Service were alerted to a suspicious person call in a Hydro One field located in the City of Welland.

The investigation quickly revealed that two suspects had been stealing copper wire in the east end of the city. With the assistance of the public, Niagara Regional Police Canine Unit and Uniform Patrol, two Port Colborne men were quickly arrested.

Two 36-year-old men from Port Colborne; Steven Laurin and Jonathan Erdei, are charged with Theft Over $5,000 and Possession of Break-in Instruments.
 
Further investigation revealed that the actions of Steven Laurin caused a power-outage in parts of Welland in the early hours of Oct. 8, 2019 when a theft attempt caused damage to hydro lines. He is additionally charged with Mischief over $5,000.
 
This investigation continues.
