Police are investigating after a taxi driver was found lying unconscious on the road with critical injuries not far from his vehicle in St. Catharines.
Niagara Regional Police say on Sept. 23 at around 4:45 a.m., officers responded to an ambulance call on Eastchester Avenue near Lorne Street.
Personnel from Niagara EMS and St. Catharines Fire Services were tending to a 58-year-old who it was determined was the driver/operator of a grey 2016 Toyota Corolla taxi parked nearby.
The man had sustained a critical injury and was transported to a local hospital and then to an out-of-region hospital for further care, police said.
Police said a member of the public had been driving in the area when they passed the stopped taxi and saw the driver lying unconscious on the roadway.
Uniform officers and a NRPS K9 Unit searched the area but did not find a suspect.
The taxi has been towed from the scene by Forensic Service Unit detectives for further examination.
Police said they are trying to determine the circumstances around the incident, which has been assigned to the Homicide Unit.
