On a night famous for green beer and other booze, local police laid just one impaired driving charge.
St. Patrick's Day R.I.D.E. checks set up last night in Thorold and St. Catharines nabbed one drunk driver, whose licence is now suspended for 90 days.
Two other drivers, whose breath samples triggered an "Alert," had their licences suspended for three days.

On Thursday, March 17, 2022, members of the Niagara Regional Police and OPP conducted R.I.D.E. spot checks within the Cities of St. Catharines and Thorold.
Throughout the night, officers stopped approximately 600 vehicles and inquired if any of the drivers had consumed any alcohol or drugs earlier in the evening. In total, 17 drivers were required to provide a sample of their breath for analysis. One driver provided a sample which resulted in a “Fail” and was subsequently arrested. Their vehicle was towed for seven days and their licence was suspended for 90 days.
Two other drivers had provided a sample resulting in an “Alert” and subsequently had their licences suspended for a period of three days.
Several tickets were also issued to drivers for various traffic related offences.
The Niagara Regional Police Service remain committed to reducing impaired driving offences through education and the apprehension of offenders through enforcement programs like R.I.D.E. Impaired driving is still the leading criminal offence causing deaths in Canada.
This initiative has been made possible, in part, as a result of grant funding from the Ministry of the Solicitor General as part of the Reduce Impaired Driving Everywhere (R.I.D.E) program.
