St. Catharines man facing weapons charges

Police say the man was seen by an off-duty officer who was reporting for duty at the time carrying what appeared to be a gun

On May 11, 2021 at approximately 5:50 a.m., an off-duty member of the Niagara Regional Police Service was reporting for duty at the 1 District St. Catharines office located at 198 Welland Avenue in St. Catharines. The officer observed a male walking near North Street and Geneva Street who appeared to be armed with a gun.

On-duty officers were notified and attended the area. The male was located nearby and placed under arrest. As a result of being arrested officers did not locate the firearm on the male. However, officers were able to attend the area he was last observed and were able to locate the weapon (shotgun) on the ground next to a vehicle.

Further investigation revealed that the Niagara Regional Police Service Real Time Operations Centre (RTOC), was able to confirm the male was carrying the weapon.

Andrew Sheldrick (33 years old), of St. Catharines was arrested and charged with the following offences of:

  • Possession of a weapon for dangerous purpose
  • Unauthorized possession of a firearm
  • Possession of firearm knowing its possession is unauthorized
  • Careless Storage of Firearm (four counts)
  • Possession contrary to order (four counts)

Sheldrick was held in custody and attended a bail hearing that took place on May 12, 2021.
