Police seize air rifle, suspected meth during suspicious vehicle call in Grimsby

The 33-year-old driver faces multiple charges as a result

On May 25, 2021 at approximately 2:05AM, 8 District - Grimsby uniform officers from the Niagara Regional Police Service (NRPS) were called to the area of South Service Road and Industrial Drive for a report of a suspicious car.

Members of the public called the NRPS after they observed a 2016 red Hyundai Tucson driving in a suspicious manor.  The members of the public followed the car to a parking lot on Industrial Drive.

An officer arrived on scene and approached the driver. In doing so, the officer observed a black Gamo Swarm Fusion 10x GEN 2 Air Rifle laying on the front seat. Further investigation led to the male driver being arrested.  A search of the male incident to arrest also located a quantity of suspected crystal methamphetamine.

Travis Jacob Walters (33 years old) of Grimsby has been arrested and charged with the offences of: 

  • Unauthorized possession of a firearm contrary to section 91(1) of the Criminal Code of Canada 
  • Possession of firearm knowing its possession is unauthorized contrary to section 92(1) of the Criminal Code of Canada 
  • Unauthorized possession in motor vehicle contrary to section 94(1) of the Criminal Code of Canada
  • Possession of substance (Crystal Methamphetamine) contrary to section 4(1) of the Controlled Drug and Substance Act

Walters was held in custody in order to attend a video bail hearing. 

Walters appeared at the Robert S. K. Welch Courthouse on May 25, 2021.  

 He was released from custody at that time with a future court date.

This investigation remains ongoing by 8 District detectives and further charges are anticipated. Anyone with information is asked to contact detectives at 905-688-4111, extension 1009935.
