On Saturday, May 21, 2022, the Niagara Regional Police conducted R.I.D.E. checkpoints as part of the Canada Road Safety Week, which runs from Tuesday, May 17 to the end of the Victoria Day long weekend on Monday, May 23. These checkpoints were conducted within the Town of Lincoln and cities of Niagara Falls and Welland.

Throughout the night, officers stopped approximately 300 vehicles and inquired if any of the drivers had consumed any alcohol or drugs earlier in the evening.  In total, 24 drivers were required to provide a sample of their breath for analysis.  Four drivers had provided a sample resulting in an “alert” and subsequently had their licences suspended for a period of three days.

In addition to the four roadside suspensions, three other drivers were issued tickets for operating their vehicles without a valid driver’s licence.

The Niagara Regional Police Service remains committed to reducing impaired driving offences through education and the apprehension of offenders through enforcement programs like R.I.D.E. Impaired driving is still the leading criminal offence causing deaths in Canada.

This initiative has been made possible, in part, as a result of grant funding from the Ministry of the Solicitor General as part of the Reduce Impaired Driving Everywhere (R.I.D.E) program.
