Person accused of spraying five people with bear mace

All victims suffered non-life threatening injuries and were assessed by EMS, on scene; a female victim was transported a local hospital for further treatment

On Sunday, June 28, 2020, at approximately 9 p.m., 1 District (St. Catharines) uniform officers were called to Sunset Beach in the City of St. Catharines, in regards to a disturbance call.

Initial investigation revealed that five people were sprayed with bear mace and three people were assaulted, as a result of an altercation. During the altercation, a male had brandished a knife, as well.

All victims suffered non-life threatening injuries and were assessed by EMS, on scene. 

A female victim was transported a local hospital for further treatment. Mackenzie Benard (22 years old) of St. Catharines, was arrested and charged with the alleged offences of:         

  • Assault, contrary to Section 266 of the Criminal Code of Canada (4 Counts)         
  • Administer Noxious Substance, contrary to Section 245(1)(b) of the Criminal Code of Canada         
  • Assault with a Weapon, contrary to Section Section 267 (a) (2 Counts)        
  • Utter Threats to Cause Bodily Harm, contrary to Section 264 (1)(a) of the Criminal Code of Canada

Benard was released from custody with a future court date of Sept. 1, 2020, at 59 Church Street, in the City of St. Catharines.

Sasha Smith (23 years old) of St. Catharines, was arrested and charged with the alleged offence of:        

  • Assault, contrary to Section 266, of the Criminal Code of Canada

Smith was released from custody with a future court date of Sept. 1, 2020, at 59 Church Street, in the City of St. Catharines.
