Owner charged after dog bites police officer: NRPS

On Tuesday, June 1, 2021, at 8:22 p.m., 3 District (Welland) uniform officers attended the area of Thorold Road and First Avenue, in the City of Welland for an animal attack call for service. As a result of an unrelated incident, information was that an officer was bitten by a bullmastiff mixed breed while in the commission of his duties.

Investigation revealed that at approximately 8:20 p.m., a 3 District uniform officer was in the area of Thorold Road and First Avenue, in the City of Wellend investigating a minor motor vehicle collision.

Inside one of the vehicles was a tan colored bullmastiff mix, with its owner. While the officer was providing information to the drivers, the owner had exited the vehicle with the dog. As a result, the dog got loose and ran at the investigating officer and latched onto his left wrist.

The officer attended a local hospital and was treated for minor injuries.

The Humane Society attended the scene to investigate. The owner was issued two fines as a result, and was ordered to muzzle the dog whenever outside of the home.

The Niagara SPCA Animal Services charged a 21-year-old male from Welland with:

  • Permit dog to attack any person - $360
  • Fail to keep dog under control - $300
