NEWS RELEASE

**************************
On Friday, Dec. 28, members of the Niagara Regional Police conducted festive R.I.D.E. spot checks in the Town of Fort Erie and City of St. Catharines. Throughout the course of the night, officers stopped and spoke with approximately 400 drivers and inquired if they had consumed any alcohol or drugs prior to operating their vehicle.

Approximately a dozen drivers were requested to provide a sample of their breath for analysis, after they advised that they had consumed alcohol. As a result, one of these drivers received an "Alert" on the approved screening device and subsequently had their driver's licence suspended for three days.

In addition to the drivers that admitted to consuming alcohol, several other drivers were requested to provide a sample of their breath for analysis, after they entered the R.I.D.E. checkpoint and were randomly selected to pull over. As a result one driver was arrested and charged with impaired driving when the result of their breath sample registered over the legal limit. Another driver also received a three day driver's licence suspension.

In addition to the impaired driving arrest and suspensions, several drivers received tickets for various traffic offences. One driver was also charged under the Cannabis Act for having care or control of a vehicle with cannabis readily available to them.

With New Year's Eve right around the corner, the Niagara Regional Police want to remind everyone that police will be out in full force looking for impaired drivers.  Please find a safe and responsible way to and from your destination so everyone can have a safe and joyous night.

This initiative has been made possible, in part, as a result of grant funding from the Ministry of Community Safety and Correctional Services as part of the Reduce Impaired Driving Everywhere (R.I.D.E) program.
