Throughout August and September of 2021, detectives from the Niagara Regional Police Service (NRPS) 2 District Street Crime Unit have been investigating multiple residential and commercial break and enters and thefts.
The investigation involved:
- An Aug. 8, 2021, mid day theft of approximately $11,400 in building supplies from a construction site in the area of Garner Road and McLeod Road in Niagara Falls.
- An Aug. 31, 2021, overnight break and enter to a residence on Montrose Road near Biggar Road in Niagara Falls, where over $25,000 worth of property was stolen.
- A Sept. 2, 2021, break and enter to a commercial property on Allanport Road near Turner Road in Thorold where items were stolen.
Detectives were able to identify a male suspect from St. Catharines. On Sept. 9, 2021, detectives executed search warrants on Vine Street South in St. Catharines.
Detectives were able to find and seize items related to the above incidents. The suspect was located and arrested on Vine Street South. At the time of his arrest, he was found to be in possession of suspected cocaine.
David Melvin Simms (56 years old) of St. Catharines has been arrested and charged with the offences of:
- Possession of property obtained by crime under $5,000 - Criminal Code Section 354
- Theft over $5,000 - Criminal Code Section 334(b)
- Break and enter commit, non-dwelling - Criminal Code Section 348(1)(a)
- Possession of a Schedule I Substance - Controlled Drugs and Substances Act Section 4(1)
Simms was held in custody to attend a video bail hearing at the Robert S. K. Welch Courthouse in St. Catharines on Sept. 10, 2021.
