On Aug. 23, 2021 at approximately 11:45 a.m., emergency service personnel responded to a report of a man in medical distress in the Niagara Gorge.

The Niagara Regional Police Service (NRPS) Communications Unit received 911 reports of the incident. Further investigations by officers determined that a group of people (three) went for a hike in the Niagara Gorge at the Niagara Glen (Niagara Parkway near Whirlpool Road). A member of the group, a 55-year-old man from Pelham, went into medical distress on the trail.

Niagara Parks Police (Uniform / K9 / High Angle River Team), NRPS 2 District – Niagara Falls uniform officers, the Niagara Falls Fire Department, Niagara Emergency Medical Services, Niagara Helicopters, Niagara Jetboats all took part in the efforts to locate and remove the man from the trail system.

Rescuers located the man in critical condition. An Ornge Air Ambulance was dispatched to the scene. Due to the difficult terrain in the Gorge, the Niagara Parkway was closed briefly as he was removed from the gorge by using a Niagara Falls Fire Department aerial truck and basket.

The man was transported to local hospital by paramedics. Despite the resuscitative efforts of the emergency services personnel and medical staff the man was pronounced deceased.

A 73-year-old woman (from Pelham) who was a part of the group was also assessed by paramedics.

The incident is being investigated by detectives from the 2 District detective office. Foul play is not suspected.
