Cyclist suffers life-threatening injuries in Niagara Falls crash

On Saturday, Sept. 23, 2023 at 7:33 p.m., emergency services personnel responded to a serious collision in the City of Niagara Falls. 2 District (Niagara Falls / Niagara on the Lake) uniform officers from the Niagara Regional Police Service (NRPS) responded to the scene on Portage Road near Upper Rapids Road. Niagara Emergency Medical Services paramedics treated a 44-year-old cyclist. The cyclist sustained life-threatening injuries and was transported to out-of-town trauma centre where he remains in critical condition.

The initial investigation determined a 44-year-old male cyclist was riding eastbound on Portage Road, east of Upper Rapids Road. He was struck by a grey 2015 Chevrolet Equinox SUV being driven by a 73-year-old female. The driver of the Chevrolet was not injured.

The investigation was assigned to detectives from the NRPS Collision Reconstruction Unit. They are being assisted by detectives from the NRPS Forensic Services Unit.

No charges have been laid.

Anyone (residents or businesses) in the area with closed circuit security cameras, doorbell video cameras, or dash cameras are asked to review their footage for suspicious activity for the period between 7 and 7:45 p.m. on Sept. 23, 2023.
