Charges upgraded to second degree murder after Welland assault victim succumbs to injuries

Both accused were initially charged with aggravated assault

The victim in relation to the assault on May 5, 2021 remained in hospital and on June 4, 2021 succumbed to his injuries sustained during the incident.

With the death of the victim, the charges against 32-year-old Larry Miles and 40-year-old Eric Fidler, both of Welland have been upgraded from aggravated assault to second degree murder.

With the consent of the next of kin, the victim is now being identified as 54-year-old Christopher McLaughlin.

Update 1 – May 8, 2021

The investigation into this serious assault that occurred on May 5, 2021, in the City of Welland has been ongoing by detectives.

On Saturday May 8, 2021, at approximately 8:45 a.m., in the City of Cambridge, members of the Niagara Regional Police Service with the assistance of the Waterloo Regional Police Service arrested a male suspect.

Larry Miles (32 years) of Welland has been arrested and charged with the offence of:

  • Aggravated assault

He was transported back to the Niagara Region to await a bail hearing.  

The victim in this matter remains in hospital in critical condition.

The investigation continues and police are asking anyone with information regarding this incident to call 905-688-4111, extension 1009242.

Original Release – May 6, 2021

On May 5, 2021, at approximately 11:54 p.m. 3 District – Welland uniform officers from the Niagara Regional Police Service (NRPS) responded to a report of a disturbance in Welland.

Officers arrived on scene in the area of 260 King Street (between Albert Street and State Street) and located a lone male in his 50’s suffering from critical injuries.  The man was treated and transported from the scene by Niagara Emergency Services paramedics to a local hospital in critical condition.

The initial investigation determined the victim had been physically assault where he was located. The suspected ran from the area just prior to the police arriving.  A NRPS Canine Unit track in the area was not able to locate the suspect.

The suspect is described as:

  • White male
  • 30 – 40 years of age
  • Tall slim build
  • Short dark hair
  • Dark hoodie
  • The suspect was also walking a large brindle colored bull mastiff type dog

The investigation has been assigned to 3 District detectives. 

Anyone (residents or businesses) in the area with closed circuit security cameras, doorbell video cameras, or dash cameras are asked to review their footage for suspicious activity for the period starting on May 5, 2021 at 11:00pm to 1:00am on May 6, 2021.
