Armed standoff in St. Catharines leads to assault charge

On Oct. 31, 2022 at 3:30 p.m., Niagara Regional Police Service (NRPS) officers assigned to 1 District (St. Catharines / Thorold) responded to a residential address in the area of Chestnut Lane and Merritt Street in the City of St. Catharines following the report of an assault.

When officers arrived, it was determined an adult male suspect was inside the residence and potentially armed. The male refused to surrender to police and exit the residence. Out of concern for public safety, members of the Emergency Task Unit, Canine Unit, and Crisis Negotiators were called in to assist with resolving the situation.

At approximately 6 p.m., the suspect exited the residence and was arrested.

Steven Haughton (52 years) of St. Catharines has been charged with the following offence:
    •    Assault – contrary to section 266 of the Criminal Code of Canada

Haughton was released on a Form 10 Undertaking and is scheduled to attend court on Jan. 27, 2023, at the Robert S.K. Welch Courthouse located at 59 Church St. in the City of St. Catharines.
