88-year-old man dies after serious crash between car, scooter in Welland (updated)

4:13 p.m. update:

On July 22, 2021, at approximately 9:08 a.m., 3 District Welland uniform officers responded to a serious collision in Welland.  

Officers responded to the intersection of the Thorold Road and Prince Charles Drive Road for a report that a car had collided with a mobility assistive device (AKA "scooter") being operated by a lone male.

Officers and emergency services personnel arrived on scene to find that a red Ford Escape had collided with a mobility assistive device.  The Ford was being driven by a 46-year-old woman from Welland and the mobility assistive device was being operated by an 88-year-old man from Welland.   The mobility assistive device operator was found to be suffering from serious injuries.  He was treated by Niagara Emergency Medical Services paramedics and then taken to a local hospital.

Detectives from the Niagara Regional Police Service Collision Reconstruction Unit and Forensic Services Unit were assigned to investigate the matter further.  The investigation has been ongoing since.  No charges have been laid to date.

On July 27, 2021, detective learned that the 88-year-old man died in hospital as a result of his injuries.  

Members of the public who wish to provide information anonymously can contact Crime Stoppers of Niagara online or by calling 1-800-222-8477.  Crime Stoppers offers cash rewards to persons who contact the program with information which leads to an arrest.

Anyone (residents or businesses) in the area with closed circuit security cameras, doorbell video cameras, or dash cameras are asked to review their footage for suspicious activity for the period between 8:45 a.m. and 9:15 a.m. on July 22, 2021.
