75-year-old St. Catharines woman dies after being pulled from water at Sunset Beach

Police say there is reason to believe the woman suffered a medical event just prior to entering the water; the coroner's investigation is ongoing

On Aug. 26, 2021, at approximately 3:50 p.m., 1 District – St. Catharines uniform officers from the Niagara Regional Police Service (NRPS) responded to Sunset Beach (Municipal Beach) on Lombardy Avenue in St. Catharines.  Officers responded for an assist ambulance call.

Members of the public called 911 after finding a woman unresponsive in the waters just off the beach. Bystanders began resuscitative efforts to save the woman. Officers from the NRPS Marine Unit arrived on scene and continued CPR.  Paramedics from Niagara Emergency Medical Services arrived on scene and took over the care of the woman.  She was transported to a local hospital in critical condition.  She was later pronounced deceased at the hospital.  

Officers have identified the woman as a 75-year-old St. Catharines resident.

As a result of the police investigation there is reason to believe the deceased suffered a medical event just prior to entering the water.  Foul play is not suspected.

The coroner continues to investigate this incident.

The Niagara Regional Police Service would like to acknowledge and thank the bystanders who became involved in this incident.
