Senior men’s hardball returns to Thorold tonight with a new season and a new team name.

The Thorold Anchors debut at 7:30 p.m. tonight at McMillan Park against the Fort Erie Cannons. Home games take place Tuesday evenings with the exception of July 18.

The team has had two rain-outs already but they will be made up at a later date including a June 10 game at home.

Thorold manager Aaron McInnis told the ThoroldNews it was time to change the name from the Fantoms to a more Thorold-related moniker.

The Fantom name dates back to the day when Fantom Manufacturing sponsored the team.

Today’s Anchors are sponsored by the Thorold Community Credit Union.

The team includes a roster of players including 10 Thorold natives plus manager McInnis, third base coach Keegan Atack and first base coach Al McInnis.

The league includes seven Niagara teams: the St. Catharines Cobras, Niagara Falls Expos, Merritton Alliance, Welland Chiefs, The Rose City Thorns plus the Cannons and Anchors.

Players in the league are over 19 years and the games are seven innings. The season includes 12 home and 12 away games.

“This year we’re partnering with Community Care,” said McInnis. “Fans who bring non-perishable donations to the home games will get a ticket for the night’s draw. There are 12 sponsors with a different gift certificate handed out each game. Tonight’s sponsor is the Overtime Pub.”

McInnis said the team is trying to present a family entertainment package and between-inning music, and a PA announcer will enhance the professional presentation.
