Jackfish score 19 unanswered runs in blowout win

Second-place Welland was losing 4-0 when the offensive onslaught began

The Welland Jackfish scored 19 straight runs Thursday night at home to erase a four-run deficit against the Hamilton Cardinals.

Justin Gideon went 3-for-5 with two solo home runs in the 19-4 victory, which moved the second-place Jackfish to 29-11 and a game behind London. Matteo Porcellato went 4-for-5 with a home run and six RBI, Brandon Nicholson had three hits, four RBI and three runs, Mattingly Romanin singled and scored three times apiece and also drove in a run, James Smibert tripled and had three RBI, Tyler Dupuis scored five times and Hogan Brown added an RBI.

Jake Harford (11-2) went seven innings and allowed four runs (three earned) on seven hits with a walk and four strikeouts.

Julian Russell (1-1) took the loss, giving up four of Welland’s seven fifth-inning runs on one hit and a walk while only recording one out.

Daury Torrez started and tossed two scoreless innings, yielding one hit.

Offensively, Laine Renaud went 4-for-5 with two RBI. Robin Fox-Pappas and Jacob Underwood drove in the other runs. Ryan Burnside and Luis Jean each had two hits and scored once.

Hamilton dropped to 11-29.
